The One You Must Ask

Don't get me wrong...there are plenty of questions you must ask the interviewer in order to land the job. Asking questions in the interview demonstrates your intelligence, drive, enthusiasm, & preparation. It turns the interview in to a conversation between professionals, putting you in a better psychological position, interview-wise. You'll also find out in case you need to work there. You'll find out, for example, if the environment is a nice fit, in case you can work with this manager, & if it is a place where you can advance your career. All in all, having questions of your own to ask in the interview is a great thing.

But.

What is the most important interview query?

What is the one query you cannot afford to forget? It is the one query that can make or break your interview.

It is "What are you looking for?"

Or you could ask it in a different way: "Can you explain your top performer in this role? What are his or her characteristics?"

Summer Jobs For College Students

In case you are a college student (or a parent of a college student) then getting a job this summer is probably already something that you are thinking about. After all, summer is around the corner. Competition for these jobs is going to be hard as lots of adults are out of work and looking to capture that position that historicallyin the past was taken by a teen. Here's my advice in case you need to have the best chance at getting summer employment.

In lieu of basically walking in to a store or business like everyone else and saying "Are you hiring for the summer?" Put on your thinking cap and actually give that store owner a reason why he/she would need to hire you. You most likely have some computer skills from your college schooling, so why not put them to work. Design a postcard or a flyer or something that would help that business owner gain additional customers and make additional money. Then, walk in to that business owner and show them that you would like to work by promoting that business in the community this summer. Perhaps you can pass out flyers in parking lots or put postcards on cars or doorsteps of people in the area. Perhaps you could even offer to stand outside the business handing out promotional material and inspiring people to go inside.
